According to the document containing this poem, I created it in 2013, but I know it has been hanging out on my computer for far longer than that. It was written for a friend who stood beside me during several difficult years. When therapists hear my story, they wonder how I managed to live the life I did. I believe it has been friendships—deep, solid, long-lasting relationships. (Many are subscribers here!) I moved quite often as a child and making friends was a survival strategy; maintaining them after I left was possibly a fear of becoming invisible, but the richness of my friendships draws from how much I love and enjoy the people who cross my path. Friendship is a gift that just keeps giving!
The Gift of Friendship
Friendship
It is a risk-taking of the heart.
Only those willing to trust their heart
To that of another person
Will ever discover its joy.
Friendship
It is a giving of one’s life
To be part of the life of another.
Only those willing to share their lives
Will ever discover the enjoyment.
Friendship
It is a commitment
To be there for each other.
Only those willing to give of their time
Will ever discover the fulfillment.
Friendship
It is a pledge
To be accountable to each other.
Only those willing to accept a friend’s counsel
Will ever discover the wisdom.
Friendship
It is a gift
Given by God to each of us.
Only those willing to open the gift
Will discover its wonder.
Note: I will be flipping the switch for paid subscribers on June 1st. As part of the benefit for being a subscriber, I will be hosting Zoom Conversations at least once a month. Supporting me through paid subscriptions will help me stay ahead of the rising cost of being an author and encouraging others on their healing journeys—both my WIX website and Zoom have upcoming cost increases!
