Happy Halloween from the Mc Family
We Do Therapy Thursdays. It is always a surprise! Even to us.
Note: Not everyone celebrates Halloween and some may have uncomfortable memories surrounding the day. Please ignore this post if that is true for you. For our family, it has always been an opportunity to enjoy time together and an outlet for creativity. This post is intended to celebrate that creativity. We were always strapped for money, but found ways to create costumes! We bought costumes only if requested by grandchildren!
I grew up in a church that loved Halloween. Every year the teens would stage the long stairway that led from the church basement to the outside entrance as a “Haunted Stairway.” All I remember were the gross things like peeled-grape eyeballs but sliding down the spooky stairs delighted me.
When my children were born, I was excited to carry on traditions. Learning that Halloween was not an approved holiday surprised me. I was determined that my children would experience my childhood traditions so we drove to neighborhoods across town and away from the college campus where I worked and enjoyed the evening. So did many of our friends.
Over the years, I became better informed about the history of Halloween, and like so many things it has been utilized for both enjoyment and nefarious purposes. During the years when we enjoyed the holiday with children and grandchildren we never came across anything that concerned us, but we also never tried to tell others they were wrong to not celebrate—it is a choice every family makes. We simply enjoyed candy and costumes.
It was truly all about the costumes, which our daughter embraced. Our son, not so much!
