RockWall Cottage Chronicles #17
A newsy, sometimes amusing, usually interesting fly-on-the-RockWall view of my life as an author with updates from my Substack adventures.
The small cottage where I live and write has been affectionally named RockWall Cottage because of the rock wall that divides our side of the property from the side of the property where our friends, the owners of the cottage, live. (Learn More)
What Has Been Happening at RockWall Cottage?
I have met many wonderful new friends as part of my healing journey and advocacy work. A few years ago Sandy and I connected after I spoke in an online conference. Over the years we forged a friendship and she has blessed me in ways she likely doesn't comprehend. Last Tuesday, she and her husband came and spent the afternoon with us while visiting from Michigan. Mind you, no one just happens by our place—it must be an intentional plan! We were honored and grateful! The weather was perfect for sitting on the porch!
On Sunday we enjoyed an afternoon with our friends who live on the other side of the RockWall. We watched the Seahawks game and were not pleased that they lost, but Scott was the food preparation guy and it was all delicious. A good time had by all. So thankful for good friends!

News, Highlights from Previous Weeks, What’s Coming, and Other Stuff
Last week was an important time to reflect on my ten-year healing journey. If you missed the reflection, you can read it here.
Thank you for the kind responses and messages in response to my reflection. I have truly been blessed by so many!
A Way to Make a Positive Impact in Our World
I am saddened by harmful words spoken in our country on Sunday and am also determined to live by this admonition: "Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
Here is something lovely that all of us can do . . .
Over the years I have had several friends and students of Puerto Rican heritage--including my first boyfriend who was a good and kind young man. The most recent is a fellow author at Berry Powell Press. Maria Pérez-Goméz's award-winning children's book is a cultural delight.
This would be a wonderful gift for the young readers in your family and a great way to honor not only Puerto Rico but those in our country with Puerto Rican heritage. (The Amazon link.)
My endorsement: "What happens when three children walk into a magical closet and end up in Puerto Rico? Author, María Pérez-Gómez, cleverly weaves Puerto Rican culture, history, and folklore into a story with unexpected turns and twists as the children, now in animal form, work to help their beloved homeland regain hope after two devastating hurricanes. As with any life adventure, real or imaginary, what they learn about love, loss, and hope permeates every step. It is a cultural contribution to the genre of children's literature that I recommend to school libraries and classroom teachers."
It was so wonderful to be able to sit on the porch, enjoy the chickens, and talk!
