Second Random Thing I Love: Music
A series intended to distract us all with some randomness, humor, and wonder!
This is the second post in a weeklong series intended to be a distraction from the seriousness of the week. (Regular content will return next week.) While my creative bent shows up in much of my other writing, this week I am giving it free rein.
Second Random Thing I Love: Music
Tonight I will be attending my grandson’s Junior Trombone Recital at Pacific Lutheran University. His remarkable musical talent is a gift to our family that came as a great surprise—we love music but are not a musically gifted family. It is to his mother’s credit that his talent was recognized and encouraged. The opportunity to attend his concerts and recitals makes my grandma's heart happy.
If I extend musical talent to my birth family, I have a brother who was a talented pianist and won a competition with the Flight of the Bumblebee as a young teenager. I loved listening to him play this song!
I attempted to learn to play as a child—as evidenced by this picture—but alas, anything that requires doing separate things with my right and left hand is nearly impossible. It is likely trauma-related; typing feels like a miracle.
My parents bought a record player and a box set of classical records—possibly a Vox Box—about the time that this picture was taken. I was fascinated. I may have been the only one who listened and when we moved it did not come with us. So much was lost in that move. Yet, the time I spent listening birthed a love for music that has lasted a lifetime.
If I were to choose an all-time favorite song, it would probably be Brave, sung by Sara Bareillis (written by Bareilles and Jack Antonoff) simply because the song had so much meaning as I healed. I never tire of listening to the song and am particularly fond of this live performance. I always feel like the audience is cheering for me also.
Say what you wanna say,
And let the words fall out.
Honestly I wanna see you be brave.
Thanks for spending time with me and my seven things this week. I will be back with #3 tomorrow!
I like this song too. Enjoy the recital!
