There isn’t much like the experience of black walnuts falling from the tree over our roof to bind Scott and me together in the pure absurdity of life. They mostly fall on our bedroom roof in the middle of the night. Sometimes they hit the neighbor's tin roof on their shed before bouncing over to our roof—then sometimes bouncing back to the tin roof. It is so loud!

I picked up this many in our backyard yesterday (likely only half of what was there) and there are probably three times that many to pick up tomorrow. They are the size of small apples. It is kind of like an Easter egg hunt, but not nearly as fun.

The squirrels find them and bury them in the yard. The tap root grows straight to China and is almost impossible to pull out once it takes hold. Leaving them is not an option—though we won’t find all of them and will likely deal with many volunteers. And of course, the squirrels will also bury them. They are everywhere—can you spot them in the grass? (BTW, our grass stays green all winter!)

It wasn’t like we weren’t warned. “Oh, by the way, in the Fall, there will be black walnuts that fall on the cottage roof.” Yes, we were warned, but we did not comprehend the magnitude! Every five years is a bumper crop—we hope this is it.

Scott and I are both researchers. We are learning a lot!

Are we going to harvest them?
