Yes moving matters! My family was so dysfunctional and we moved almost every year in my elementary school years and all through high school. I went through a lot of depression but learned to survive through the chaos.

It was so painful leaving my friends time and time again and I am beginning to see the impact it has had in my life.

Thank you so much Janyne for writing about this.

I don't always write on topics so closely to processing them--but this one seemed so important. The impact was so subtle that I didn't even recognize it as connected to moving! I am glad it was helpful.

Thank you for writing about this! We've been in one place for over a year (in our bus) and my daughter has made such good friends here, but my husband's mental health has made it necessary for us to move to be near my mom. I'm struggling with taking my kid away from all her friends, but we are hopeful we can come back after our life feels a little more stable. We're moving to a pretty rural place and I'm worried about helping her find friends, since we homeschool. But we have promised to dig deep and look for community and we're hoping for the best. I moved a couple of times when I was around her age, so I know what she's going through. I hate it, and it's necessary for our family!

Thabk you again for sharing. It sure isn't easy, but I'm hoping to be able to help her through the move better than my parents were able to do for me.

Yes, sometimes the move is the best choice and I am glad you are being so proactive in helping your daughter navigate the move. It will make a difference!

Thank you so much for sharing this research, Janyne! It's going into my memoir. I moved 14 times before I was 13, and for a kid on the spectrum, it was several times worse than that sounds. Add the isolation of homeschooling and abusive/neglectful parenting, and... well, yes. Moving really should be included in ACES.

So glad it is helpful! I wrote two memoirs about my childhood and did not understand the significance so I am glad you have this information as you write!

I don’t think I’ve ever thought about the impact of moving this way. My mother left me with my grandparents when I was 11, and I was sent away to a boarding school when I was 14. I was all over the place between those two moves. What you have written about here makes so much sense. Thank you!
