Yesterday’s post, Unpack that Baggage provided word pictures for what codependency looked like for Scott and me. Before I wrote it, I wondered if a song would illustrate what codependency looked like. It didn’t take me more than a minute to remember this song from my teenage years.
Many of the characteristics of co-dependency are in these lyrics. I compared the lyrics to a list of common signs of codependency and maybe stretched it a bit, but not much! You can see the entire list here.

a deep-seated need for approval from others
overwhelming fears of rejection or abandonment

self-worth that depends on what others think about you
a habit of taking on more work than you can realistically handle, both to earn praise or lighten a loved one’s burden

excessive concern about a loved one’s habits or behaviors
a mood that reflects how others feel, rather than your own emotions
Then, Scott and I wondered if we could describe our marriage with songs . . .
