Chapter Eleven: Continental Breakfast
In a quiet, somewhat anxious voice, Katelyn said, “We were just talking about the same thing. It will put a serious damper on things if that red door keeps slamming. It looks like everyone else came for breakfast. Maybe someone should go talk to her.”
“Let me try.” It was Karynn and the entire room full of women knew she was our best hope. We all murmured encouragement as she headed back toward the kitchen and stairs.
We could hear voices in the kitchen, and I figured she was explaining the plan to Thyme. We heard her footsteps going up the creaky stairs as Thyme entered the café.
Always cheery, Thyme smiled at the room and asked, “Did everyone get enough to eat?”
Without waiting for an answer, she continued, “There will be snacks available on the counter anytime you need them. We will have lunch at noon and dinner at 6:00. You will need to keep up your energy today as you set up your booth. I have some teenagers who will come to help you get everything upstairs. There is a package of dots with colors of your booths on the table in the basement. Just put a dot on the item and leave it in front of the dumb waiter. And just like magic, it will arrive in your booth!”
Before she returned to the kitchen, Thyme paused and said, “I explained this to Karynn. I hope she can convince Evelynn to participate.”
Then smiling broadly, she said, “See you around!” and turned to walk through the kitchen door.
It felt like the entire room sighed with relief. It was hard to imagine that we could get everything up the stairs and set up in one day. It seemed much more realistic now. I did still wonder, why on earth we were all going along with this, but apparently, we were.
Everyone except Evelynn.
